Abstract

Many forms of atmospheric pollution affect human health and the environment at levels from local to global Environmental Research Laboratory conducted a study on occurrence of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), Methane (CH4) and particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) in Jabalpur M.P. The objective of this study was to establish baseline levels and study the behavior of airborne pollutants from natural as well as anthropogenic activity with seasonal variations. The study revealed that the average 24hr values for NO2, particulate matter and 8 hour average of CO were within the acceptable levels of NO2-80mg/m3, PM10–100μg/m3, PM2.5-60μg/m3 and CO-02mg/m3 (for industrial and rural, urban area) respectively, whereas the levels of O3 as 8 hour average is 100μg/m3 occasionally exceeded the MPPCB permissible limits during the study period, but ozone is in the limit. The seasonal variation based on one year's data reveals that the highest concentration of particulate matter and gaseous pollutants were during winter and for CO during summer months. Correlation with rain fall of various parameters was also studied. The correlation values was mostly negative.
