Abstract

Ceramic tools are finding increasing application the world over, especially to machine hard and HSTR alloys. Therefore, efforts to improve the quality of such tools and find newer tools with higher hardness and toughness are being made by a number of industries and laboratories. The present tools based on ZTA and ZTA with YSZ are developed and Performance tests on these tools were conducted using the facilities at the institute. It has been found that ZTA and ZTA with YSZ tools performed well at cutting speeds of 140 m/min and 100 m/min with feed rate of 0.1mm/rev, depth of cut 0.5 mm and with tool nose radius of 1.2 mm on hardened (about 450 BHN) and unhardened stock (340 BHN) when compared to conventional Tungsten Carbide tools.
