Laterite soil sample collected from Kandukuru, Prakasam (Dist) Andhra pradesh, India. A depth of 5–8 cm was pretreated with calcium carbonate (1: 1 w/w) and dried at 45 C for 1 h in order to reduce the aboundence of bacteria and fungi. Both streptomycin (50μg/ml) and nystatin (50 μg/ml) were added to the media just before pouring into Petri plate. Soil dilution plate technique was employed for isolation of actinomycete strains. Out of 10 actinomycete strains isolated from two different media, one predominant strain designated as CN-4 was chosen for bioactive metabolite production. The secondary metabolites produced by actinomycete strain were extracted. The antimicrobial activity of the strain was determined by agar well diffusion method. As the strain CN-4 exhibited high antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi tested.
