Although the modern education system in India is based on the Anglo-American tradition, there is a great variety of institutional systems in higher education. This article describes the historical background and current research institutions regarding higher education system. The main motive is to get the researchers aware about the research institution viz. UGC, AICTE, ICAR, ICSSR and ICMR. Some issues related to higher education like resource constraints and wastage, poor quality and relevance in many institutions, poor technology and infrastructure support, lack of autonomy and accountability etc.
