Using ICT in Energizing Teacher Education

The quality of education depends on the quality of teachers. Here we are talking about teacher educators who are responsible for generating future teachers. These future teachers should have to be well equipped with latest knowledge of their subjects as well as knowledge of latest technologies to be used in the teaching learning process. As in the changing social, economic and technological scenario teaching-learning process has become more crucial than ever. Now, with emerging new technologies, the teaching-learning process is being shifted from teacher centered, lecture based instruction system to student centered, interactive learning system. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) may be helpful in teacher education to meet these challenges. The integration of ICTs in teaching is need of the hour. Its use helps in dealing issues like accessibility, flexibility and diversity. The present article discusses about the need of ICT in teacher education through various points. Further, it throws light on the different aspects of the teacher education where teacher educators may use ICT for the improvement of their classroom teaching as well as for the improvement of their students’ performance. These have been named as--use of MOOCs for knowledge enhancement, use of Podcast, computer based diagnostic testing, web based instructional material, curriculum reforms through ICT, use of ICT in research work and Placement cell and ICT.
