Text in the context: ‘Ecological violence’ in contemporary literature

This paper corroborates how the anxious wedding of sustainable nature and development produce the offspring of ecological violence and to see this premier violence the perception of Foucaldian analysis would be used. In the traditional society where nature was a resource to maintain livelihood the trouble of ecological violence was minimal but now in modern times when we have the knowledge of science we can interfere in the hills, sea, air and where not. With this knowledge of science a kind of power emerges by which human wants to control nature. This shift of nurturing to controlling nature creates a paradigm where we are standing and facing earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods, draughts etc. The concept of sustainable development which take stand in contrary to ecological violence discourse are very important enough because to preserve nature “governmentality” deal with technologies and leading to a space of “global eco-governmentality” which is a kind of policy of hegemony in the modern times and emerges like a new tool to govern developing countries in neo-liberal times. At the cross of environmental sustainability and economic development market lies which provide greener choices for consumers but at very expensive rates which is very hard to buy for third world countries and again by doing so the whole burden of violence shifts towards the developing countries. In this paper an attempt would be made to understand the creation of ecological violence and in response to that a new social entity which is called environment and the result of this is a kind of shift in our day to day interaction with nature with various destructive and so called constructive approaches. In the context of the above mentioned idea, this paper try to explore the ecological violence in the literary works of critique to modernity, emergent of subaltern literatures and the feminist construction of nature-culture debate.
