Abstract

Maneka case has paved the way for expanding the horizons of human rights in India by evolving new dimensions of personal freedom like right to speedy trail, right to human treatment inside prison against torture, and right to live with basic human dignity. The Supreme Court has considerably widened the scope of the right to life and personal liberty (Article 21) and has held that its protection will be available for safeguarding the fundamental rights of prisoners and for effecting prison reforms.
