Abstract

MANAGEMENT IS DOING THE THINGS RIGHT; LEADERSHIP IS DOING THE RIGHT THINGS – PETER F DRUCKER

Over the last three decade quality management has been increasingly viewed as a critical competitive weapon by firms around the world. Commitment of top management has been cited as one of the most important factors impacting the success for implementation of total quality management practice in a firm. In this research study an extensive literature review in the field of total quality management assists to identify a list of critical factors (career planning, quality management, policies and plans, achievement and promotion, benchmarking, employee involvement, reward and recognition, education and training, customer focus and product quality). It is accepted world-wide that one of the key factors for forms to be successful in the global market is quality. Total quality management (TQM) has been defined as an integrated organizational effort designed to improve quality at every level. TQM is also defined as quest of excellence, fitness for use, value for money, customer satisfaction etc. The International Organization for Standards (ISO) defines TQM as, "TQM is a management approach for an organization, centered on quality, based on the participation of all its members and aiming at long term success through customer satisfaction and benefits to all members of the organization and to society."
