Abstract

Recently new urban areas which are transformed from rural to urban character nearer or away from statutory urban centres are known as Census Towns (C.Ts). Though these towns attained minimum number of population, density and non-farm nature of workforce to become urban, they are still administered by gram panchayat. The growth of C.Ts specially 2001–2011 is very much significant to the process of urbanization in India and West Bengal as well. The Present study analyses the growth of Census Towns in West Bengal, their spatial distribution and role performed by them in urbanization process.
