Understanding the regional pattern of agricultural situation and development is crucial as far as strategic planning is concerned at micro level for inclusive growth of the region and the country as a whole. Planning Commission of India has also highlighted the importance of district level plan for agriculture development. Agriculture in Madhya Pradesh a central province of India is known for its wide diversity in crop production, different agro climatic zone and spatio-temporal variations in growth and productivity. Recently for the fourth consecutive time the state has been awarded Krishi Karman award by the Prime Minister for the highest growth in wheat production, still there is Regional disparity in terms of inter district production of food grains. This variation poses a number of problems while the state goes for homogeneous planning and policies for the state.
The present study analyses the district level disparity in agricultural situation of Madhya Pradesh on a number of agricultural parameters. The status of agricultural situation of different districts of Madhya Pradesh has been estimated with the help of composite index based on optimum combination of nineteen relevant indicators. The district is considered as the unit of analysis and forty five districts are included in the study which covered the entire geographical area of the state. On the basis of analysis a few recommendations have been made to improve the situation.
