Farm mechanization has played a pivotal role in the green revolution in Punjab agriculture by increasing cropping intensity and overall production, and has helped to create off-farm employment. The present study has examined the magnitude of tractorization and the requirement of tractor power in Punjab. The number of tractors has increased over the years and it has now become an irreversible technology. District-wise concentration of tractors in Punjab revealed that number of tractors per thousand hectares of net sown area and total cropped area was quite skewed and varied. Density of tractors in Punjab has increased and tractor has emerged as one of the major items of machinery use in state agriculture over time. The accessibility of tractors is more than its need in the state. The cost structure has been building up. The region-wise requirement of tractors needs to be carefully assessed. Liberal loaning policy needs to be curtailed in the areas where the number of tractors is already in surplus.
