Abstract

Urbanisation is a process of becoming urban. The contiguous area of an urban centre get urbanised more rapidly than the area far from it. As a result new urban centers emerge. To explain the process of urbanisation in India, census of India has advocated several terms from time to time such as Urban Agglomeration, Standard Urban Area, Urban Outgrowth (O.G.), Non Municipal Town, Census Town, etc. In this research paper, the main focal point is the Urban Outgrowth. The term Urban Outgrowth was introduced in population Census of India in 1981 to represent the projected part of the town, it may be a village or hamlet or an enumeration block contiguous to the town. The main objectives of the study are to analyse the growth and development of outgrowth, spatial distribution, role of urban outgrowths in Urban Agglomeration, process of urbanisation in the outgrowth, general characteristics of the outgrowths and role of outgrowths in the development of New Towns in West Bengal. Various census reports, data of Municipal Statistica. Abstract, urban map of West Bengal etc. are the main sources of data. The study reveals spatial and temporal variation of urban outgrowth, urbanisation processes, sub-urbanisation and the role of Outgrowths in the urbanisation of West Bengal
