Migration is a dynamic process where each stream of migration evolves into new forms over time, as a result it is not susceptible to generalization. Internal migration is emerging as a significant livelihood alternative for people of rural India; moreover it is a complex phenomenon that is shaped by a combination of factors and its patterns and outcomes vary between locations.
The paper spotlights an outlook on current trends and pattern of internal migration in India. Different migration estimates are computed for in-depth analysis of rates. The changes in the population mobility across different states and union territories in India is observed using the data drawn from census of India 1991 and 2001. Migration Tables in the form life time migrants and growth of life time and Intercensal migrants. By considering the Place of birth by place of enumeration tables, we have estimated different migration rates like total net migration, total net surviving out-migrants, annual average migration attraction, etc. The results exhibit that internal migration in India has increased over a period of time especially in rural to urban migration. Inflow of migration is more in developed states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh etc. and union territories like Delhi. More outflow is observed in the states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh etc. The states having metropolitan cities attract migration from different states for better livelihood.
