The first part of this paper deals with the backdrop of adolescence, i.e. how the concept of adolescence as a distinct phase came up. Before understanding the concept it is pertinent to know the meaning of adolescence. It is also important to know how adolescence is conceptualized at global level and in Indian context. The second part of the paper describes how adolescent girls are the most ignored section of Indian society especially in the state of Haryana which is supported by statistical data. The third part of the paper elaborates various policies and programmes designed and implemented for the benefit of adolescent girls. The last part of the paper comprises of an attempt to critically evaluate the schemes and programmes targeting adolescent girls, along with suggestions for the policy makers of the State.
