Abstract

Family is the first agency of socialization having a great influence on value inculcations. A home sets pattern for a child's attitude towards people and society. Parents build intellectual growth in the child and impart good values. The future of a country depends on its youth and its foundation begins with the kind of education provided in the very beginning. This is why the elementary education becomes an essential entity in building the nation. The increasing crime rate among the juvenile is an alarm for the entire society to realize that it is time to teach the kids the right values a society demands for a peaceful sustainable future.

The objective of the paper is to find out the role of the parents in inculcating values among the children at home. To analyze the impact of the environment provided by the parents and the society for the emotional development of the child and to find out if the values imparted by an external environment and people really have an impact on the development of the child. The study is quantitative as well as qualitative based on the primary and secondary data. Primary data is recorded from 50 parents, both male and female, between 18 to 40 years of age. Purposive sampling is used to reach the respondents. The respondents are the parents having children studying in primary section either in government or private schools. The study area of the present study is Srinagar Garhwal, Uttarakhand. The opinions of the parents are recorded through face to face interview with the help of an interview schedule, with both structured and unstructured questions. An in-depth discussion with the respondents was also part of the study to understand the opinion of the respondents regarding their understanding of values. Secondary data consists of the reports, journals, articles, magazines, books etc. The data is represented through tables and graphs as per the requirement. After an analysis of the data it is summarized that most of the parents are not aware of the responsibility they hold to shape the moral attitude of their children. They do agree of having moral education in school curriculum but the parents are found to be cynical of the education system that is more quantitative and focuses less on the qualitative aspect.
