Open Government Data (OGD) is an effective tool, and is applicable for good governance. It was emphasised that for data to be always meaningful, it needs to be authentic, reliable, update and relevant. Open Government Data Movement and Right to Information Movements are closely related, they each have their own focus and priorities. This paper highlights the main principles, concepts and criteria farming open government data initiatives in India, and the issues challenging their implementation. This paper also discusses the Right to Information Act, and how it differs from the OGD initiative, and challenges faced by users in accessing data from OGD portal.
