Abstract

Operations management designs, operates and improves productive systems-systems for getting work done. Operations constitute a transformation process wherein inputs are transformed into outputs. In operations management effective is achieved if the transformation process is performed efficiently and that the output is of greater value than the sum of inputs. Thus the role of operations is to create value. The transformation process itself can be viewed as a series of activities along a value chain extending from supplier to customer. Any activities that do not add value should be eliminated.

For operational effectiveness the key activities include organizing work, selecting processes, arranging layouts, locating facilities, designing jobs, measuring performance, controlling quality, scheduling work, managing inventory, and planning production. This paper based on empirical study tries to find the role of TQM in operational effectiveness in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
