Wildlife crime is an area of study typically defined from a legalistic perspective as an act in contravention of laws protecting wildlife. These crimes occur both within and across national borders and may include poaching, trafficking in wildlife or wildlife products. The national and international illegal trade in wildlife has grown to mammoth proportions and is seriously threatening the existence of many species of plants and animals causing environmental crime. Understanding what is being hunted, who is hunting them and how it is being traded can help in tackling this growing menace, this involves criminological theories and conservation criminology.
