Abstract

Voice is the element of speech that provides the speaker with vibratory signal upon which speech is carried out. It serves as the melody of our speech and provides expression, feeling, intent, and mood to our daily articulated thought (Stemple, Glaze & Klaben, 2000). Voice can be defined as normal when the quality is clear, pitch and loudness are appropriate for age, gender and situation, produced without undue effort, pain, strain or fatigue; and is satisfactory to the speaker in terms of fulfilling his or her occupational, social and emotional vocal needs (Ferrand, 2012). Diseases that affect the larynx cause changes in the patient's vocal quality. Early signs of deterioration of the voice due to vocal malfunctioning are normally associated with breathiness and hoarseness of the produced voice. Voice plays major role in communication. In professional voice users, their livelihood depends on voice quality. Occupational or professional voice user is anyone whose voice is essential to their job or anyone who require a certain voice quality to have an effect on others. Occupational voice users include, teachers, clerks, sales people etc.
