Credit cooperatives are the oldest and most numerous of all the types of cooperatives in India. The cooperative credit institutions in the country can be broadly classified into Rural Credit Cooperatives and Urban Credit Cooperatives. The urban co-operative banks are functioning in India right from the beginning of the twentieth century, immediately after the enactment of the first Co-operative Societies Act in 1904. The achievements of urban co-operative banks in Karnataka state are admirable. This paper tries to examine the urban cooperative banks in Karnataka; the urban co-operative banks have become an outstanding example to other sector of the economy. The success of urban co-operative banks in Karnataka can be attributed to a combination of variety of factors like interest and zeal of workers, support and confidence of general public etc. This study has observed that the growth of urban co-operative banks there was significant growth in membership, share capital, Working Capital Reserves Deposits loans outstanding and Advances, and Net Profit etc.
