Study on Tensile Testing of AZ81 Mg Alloy/Si3 Composites

Abstract

Si3–AZ81 Mg alloy composites having 0–8 wt% of silicon nitride particles were fabricated by the liquid metallurgy (stir cast) method. The tensile properties of Si3–AZ81 Mg alloy composites have been evaluated and compare with its base alloy. The results revealed that the AZ81-8wt% of silicon nitride composites show improvement of 15.38% in tensile strength at a normal load of 9.81 N when compared to matrix, i.e., base alloy. As the wt% of silicon nitride increases,improvement in tensile properties is also noticed. The fractographic images structures of the composites were studied to know the uniform dispersion of the silicon nitride particles in the matrix after fracture. It has been observed that the addition of silicon nitride particles significantly improves ultimate tensile strength properties as compared with that of the unreinforced matrix.
