A local isolate of contagious pustular dermatitis (CPD) virus was characterized. The virus produced characteristic pock lesions of Chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of developing chicken embryo. A virus titer of 2×108 PFU/ml was recorded at 6th passage. Histo-pathologically the ectodermal cells of infected CAM showed hydropic degeneration & presence of acidophillic intra-cytoplasmic inclusion bodies. The virus did not agglutinate chicken erythrocytes. The virus was completely inactivated at 70°C in 10 min and was sensitive to pH 3 and pH 8.
