Mating behaviour of Rams in pen mating system

This study was undertaken with the aim to assess the mating behaviour of Muzaffarnagari rams under pen mating system. Six intact rams and eight overiectomized ewes were used for the experiment. Ewes were brought into oestrus by exogenous hormones. Mating activities like sniffing, flehmen response, leg kicking, vocalization, false mounting, mounting and ejaculation were noted during 1 hr observation when single ram exposed to single ewe. Time taken for different ejaculations and total number of ejaculations were noted. Leg kicking with vocalization was most predominant activity. The duration of flehmen lasted for 10 to 50 sec. usual standing position before ejaculation was standing behind ewe. Total number of ejaculations during 1 hr mating session was 6.50.
