Abstract

Kanni Adu breed of goats in Tamilnadu were subjected to karyological analysis to study the number and morphometric attributes of the chromosomes. The Karyotype of 2n = 60 chromosomal complements was constructed and their relative length measured. There were 29 pairs of autosomes and one acrocentric X and metacentric Y chromosome. Altered slide preparation techniques and different methods of drying showed no significant differences. Dropping of cell suspension on to slides from a height below 10 cm and possibility of storage of cell suspension in −20°C up to one year are suggested. The X and Y chromosomes shared 5 and 2 per cent of the total chromosomal complement respectively in this breed.
