Abstract

Kutchi is one of the most popular goat breed found in the northwestern arid to semi arid region of India. Ahmedabad, Bhuj and adjoining districts of Gujarat state are the main natural habitat of the breed. Locally this breed is also known as Gujarati or Cuthi. This breed is also found in adjoining areas of Rajasthan. Animals of this breed are medium to large in body size with hairy black colour. It is well known for its tolerance of heat and cold climate, disease resistance and fibre. These animals are reared for milk, meat and fibre. Body weight of Kutchi goat at birth, 3, 6 and 12 months of age were 3.31, 12.82, 18.98 and 28.55 kg, respectively. The adult body weights of male and female were 58.45 and 38.78 kg, respectively. Kutchi goat produced milk yield of 70 and 95 kg in 90 and 120 days lactation. Kidding percent was 70 and twining percent was 11.68.
