Abstract

Reproduction is a prerequisite to optimize the animal productivity in addition to improved feeding, management and disease control. In order to enhance the reproductive efficiency of small ruminant species, it is mandatory to have a thorough understanding of their inherent reproductive potential. Goats contribute significantly to the agrarian economy of the country and play a vital role in the livelihood security of small and marginal farmers and landless labourers especially in arid, semi-arid and mountainous regions of the country. Goat species provides quick pay off due to early sexual maturity, shorter generation interval and high prolificacy. Over the years vast array of reproductive biotechniques have resulted in augmentation of reproductive efficiency of different farm species including goats. The present communication gives emphasis on normal reproductive efficiency in goats and also discusses various reproductive biotechniques, their potential applications, suitable modifications and limitations keeping in view the future demand of these technologies for betterment of mankind.
