Abstract

The carcass traits of six month old Sirohi finisher male kids maintained on ad lib concentrate and roughage (60:40) without grazing (Group 1) and grazing with around 200 gram concentrate supplementation (Group 2) were studied. Average pre-slaughter weight of kids was 24.95±0.55 and 19.33±0.27 kg, in G1 and G2, respectively. Hot carcass weight was 11.73±0.32 and 8.68±0.28 kg, in G1 and G2, respectively. Dressing yield on empty live weight (ELW) was 56.07% and 55.76% in G1 and G2, respectively. The standard cuts of carcass contained 59.14% lean, 5% superficial fat, 4.77% intermuscular fat and 13.25% bone in Group1, corresponding values in Group 2 were 55.79% lean, 2.75% superficial fat content, 3.54% intermuscular fat and 15.68% bone content. In the current study carcass fat was 9.77% and 6.29% in Group1 and Group 2, respectively. The present study suggested that rearing of weaner kids on ad lib roughage and concentrate (60:40) basis provided carcasses of desirable weight and quality.
