Abstract

Association of a variety of different chromosome abnormalities with disturbed fertility is widely observed in various mammalian species. The present study was carried out in a one year old goat with abnormal external reproductive organs to ascertain the chromosomal complement and the mean sister chromatid exchange (SCE). Blood sample was collected in heparinised vacutainer from a kid exhibiting narrow vulval opening with a hypertrophic clitoris and a small scrotal sac. Short-term leucocyte culture was carried out to examine the metaphase spreads and ascertain the chromosome complement. On examination of the metaphase spreads under 1000x magnification, chromosome complement of 60, XX/XY was observed. A significant increase in the mean SCE frequency of 13.00±0.06 (6–15) was observed when compared to 5.22±0.10 (3–11) in normal two goats born as co-triplet to the affected goat.
