Abstract

Maximum goats (53.58%) in the area of study were non-descript. Barbari and Jamunapari are the native breeds of this zone and their populations were 10.92 and 2.29%, respectively. Sirohi breed recorded the highest in number (32.39%) under defined breed. Education of farmers was negatively and significantly correlated with proportion of non-descript goats to the total goat population. Flock size was negatively correlated with land holding, education level of farmers and family education status. The average flock size of goats was 13.66. Landless farmers had maximum flock size of 17.46 followed by small/semi-medium farmers (14.79) and marginal farmers (13.00). Maximum goats (62%) were >12 months-old. Farmers ’category and goat population in different age groups were found to be associated. Appropriate, extension strategy needed to be adopted in the area of study to increase the population of improved breeds of goats.
