Effect of non-genetic factors on milk production in Jakhrana goats

Genetics and Breeding Division, ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Goats, Makhdoom-281 122, Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

Data on 553 lactation records of Jakhrana goats maintained under semi-intensive management were analyzed to study the effect of non-genetic factors on milk production. Least-squares means of milk production in 30, 60, 90 and 120 days were 45.31±1.16, 84.77±2.09, 116.54±2.94 and 145.42±3.99 litre, respectively. Year of kidding had significant (P<0.01) effect on milk production on all the days. Does nursing triplet kids produced more milk than does nursing single or twins, although the type of birth of kids had non-significant effect on the milk yield. Milk production of season-I (October-November) was non-significantly higher than season-II (March-April) for all milk traits. Dam's weightatkidding showed significant influence for 90(P<0.01) and 60 days (P<0.05) milk yield. Parity of dam had significant (P<0.01) effect on all the milk production traits. It was concluded that the non-genetic factors also play an important role in creating variation in the milk production ofdoes.
