Abstract

To establish the histogenesis and organogenesis of lung in prenatal period in Gaddi sheep, the micrometric characters of lung were studied in prenatal Gaddi sheep. A total of 18 foetuses were collected from different slaughterhouses located in and around Palampur (Himachal Pradesh). Based on foetal age, the prenatal lung samples were divided into three groups as Gr-I (up to 50 days of gestation), Gr-II (51–100 days of gestation) and Gr-III (101–150 days of gestation). With the advancement of gestation age, significant (P<0.05) increase in diameter of blood vessels and significant (P<0.05) decrease in cartilage length in right apical and right diaphragmatic lobes was observed. However, the cartilage width decreased significantly (P<0.05) in right and left diaphragmatic lobe from Gr-II to Gr-III. The number of bronchioles per field increased significantly (P<0.05) in cardiac, diaphragmatic and accessory lobe from Gr-II to Gr-III and the interalveolar septal thickness in the left apical lobe was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of apical and cardiac lobes of right lung.
