A study was undertaken to analyze the cost and returns of commercial goat farming under semiintensive and intensive systems of management in Tamil Nadu. Data were collected randomly from 120 commercial goat farmers in six districts of the state. The results revealed that the total rearing cost per goat per annum was lowest among large farmers (Rs. 2813.0) category, followed by small (Rs. 3016.0) and the highest in medium farmers (Rs. 3147.0) category with the overall cost of Rs. 2922.0. The net returns per goat per annum was the highest among large farmers (Rs. 3085.0) followed by medium farmers (Rs. 2844.0) and lowest among small farmers (Rs. 2213.0) with the overall value of Rs. 2917.0. The study suggested that the commercial goat farming is a profitable enterprises in the study area. However, innovativeness in adoption of improved goat farming technologies, effective marketing strategies, minimizing the cost of production through efficient utilization fixed and variable resources would be augmenting for the successful and sustainable commercial goat production.
