A study was carried out to understand the consumption pattern of mutton and chevon in all 35 administrative wards of Srinagar city (Jammu and Kashmir), India. Seven meat consuming households were randomly selected from each ward making a total of 245 respondent families. The study showed that 60% of the households were nuclear families with most of them having business as their main occupation and an average annual income of Rs. 4.09 lakh. Among these two meats, mutton was the most preferred and habituation for mutton was found. An average monthly consumption of mutton was 6.20 kg/household with an average monthly expenditure of Rs 3099.49/household. On the other hand, chevon was consumed by only about half of the households. Among the various socio-economic variables, family income was the most influential factor on consumption pattern of mutton and chevon.
