Abstract

A study was carried out in 2018 to assess the knowledge on sheep rearing practices among migratory families rearing Deccani sheep in Belagavi district (Karnataka). The migratory Deccani sheep rearers (90 men and 90 women) were selected by purposive snow ball sampling method. The primary data were collected with the help of well-structured pre-tested interview schedule. The results showed that 95.00% of both men and women possessed medium level of knowledge on reproduction, breeding, common diseases, health, feed/nutrition and programmes/training. Significant (p<0.01) difference in knowledge was observed among men and women with regard to common diseases of sheep. Age, annual family income, flock size and social participation were positively and significantly (p<0.01) correlated with the knowledge of men. Women's annual income and flock size were positively and significantly (p<0.01) correlated with knowledge level. Hence, the study suggested planning and implementation of various extension activities tailored to meet the specific needs of the migrating families at their place of halts or on their routes of migration.
