Abstract

A study was conducted to identify the species using DNA-based method in primary byproducts comprising heart, liver and bones of sheep and goats. The molecular identification was carried out using species-specific polymerase chain reaction in the primary by-products in both fresh and heat-processed state. The results revealed successful amplification of sheep and goat primary by-products at 331 and 157 base pairs, respectively which proves the suitability of polymerase chain reaction in both the fresh and heat-processed sheep and goat primary byproducts. Hence the method proved its suitability in meat species identification in primary edible by-products which can be adopted by different regulatory authorities.
