Abstract

This study aimed to compare the clinical efficacy of two new-generation antimicrobial drugs viz., marbofloxacin (MBX) and cefquinome sulphate (CFQ) in naturally affected clinical cases of caprine pneumonia. Among the 164 goats screened, 70 (42.68%) of them were suffering from pneumonia of bacterial origin. Treatment was given to 50 pneumonic goats (MBX group - 30 and CFQ group -20 goats). Both the MBX and CFQ were administered @ 2mg/kg body weight, intramuscularly for 3 days. Staphylococcus spp. (41.42%) followed by Pasteurella spp. (28.57%) were the major causative agents of pneumonia in goats. Acumulative clinical score (CCS) system was used along with haematological indices to evaluate the treatment efficacy. The major clinical signs were pyrexia, coughing, serous to mucopurulent nasal discharge and sneezing. All the goats that completed treatment in the both the group were completely healthy at the end, but clinical improvement was noticed early i.e. from day 2 nd in MBX (CCS 1.66±0.11) as compared to CFQ (CCS 2.09±0.14) group. Significant (P<0.01) differences were recorded in the mean CCS of the MBX and CFQ groups on different treatment days. The study revealed that both marbofloxacin and cefquinome sulphate were effective in managing pneumonia in goats.
