Abstract

A study was conducted to predict the foetal gestational age by ultrasonographic (USG) measurements viz., placentome diameter (PD), crown rump length (CRL), biparietal diameter (BPD), umbilical cord diameter (UCD) and vaginal electric resistance (VER) in 18 Osmanabdi goats. USG examination was carried out using transrectal probe (7.5 MHz) and transabdominal probe (5 MHz) from days 28 to 112 of gestation at 7-day intervals and vaginal electric resistance (VER) was recorded from days 28 to 112 at 7-day intervals thereafter on days 145, 152 and kidding. The accuracy of pregnancy on day 28 of gestation by transrectal USG and VER was 100 and 83.33%, respectively. Significant (P<0.01) correlations between PD (R2 =0.89), CRL (R2 =0.96), BPD (R2 =0.98) and UCD (R2 =0.93) with gestational age were observed. VER showed significant (P<0.01) difference between days 112 and 145 of gestation. The results suggested that USG biometric measurements are useful indicators to predict foetal gestational age and BPD is one of the best foetal measurements for estimation of gestational age in goats.
