Histoarchitecture of supernumerary teats in goats: A preliminary study

Department of Veterinary Anatomy, College of Veterinary Science, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana-141 004, Punjab

Abstract

A study was conducted on gross and histological details of supernumerary teat (SNT) in goats. SNTs were cranially located in all the goats studied. They were simple or ancillary and complex or fish or fork types. In simple SNT, skin was very thin compared to normal teat, and no internal luminal structure was observed. In complex SNT, separate teat orifice, teat canal, teat cistern and gland cistern were observed but the size was smaller than normal. There was significant difference in the histology of normal and SNT, thickness of teat wall, lumen of teat sinus, diameter of teat orifice and the presence of teat sphincter were less in SNT than normal. One teat was normal externally but had three teat orifices internally; one was normal size in the centre while the other two were smaller on either side of normal teat giving the appearance of Smily. It may be concluded that prompt surgical interventions and treatment of SNTs are required to avoid further complications.
