Abstract

A study was conducted to know the socio-economic profile of Kanni Adu goat farmers in Tamil Nadu. From April 2019 to January 2021, data were collected from 381 respondents using pre-tested interview schedule. It was observed that most of the respondents (72.70%) possessed 1 to 15 Kanni Adu goats in their herds. More than half of the respondents (51.18%) were engaged in goat rearing as a primary occupation and the rest as a secondary occupation. Almost all respondents (98.43%) did not migrate to any other places or urban areas for employment. An overwhelming majority of the respondents (96.85%) did not attend any training on goat rearing. The study suggests that Kanni Adu goat farming provided livelihood and prevented the migration of farmers from villages to urban areas for employment. There is a need to impart a capacity building programme exclusively to goat farmers for improving their knowledge and skills on goat farm management.
