Abstract

Data on growth and wool production traits of Malpura and Kheri sheep maintained under farmers' flocks were recorded during 1994 to 1996 and analyzed for performance evaluation. The overall least squares means for birth, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months in Malpura sheep were 3.16, 9.86, 15.58, 20.23 and 25.56 kg, respectively whereas in Kheri sheep corresponding figures were 3.12, 10.81, 15.97, 19.88 and 23.68 kg. Sheep farmers of this region take three clips from their sheep in a year i.e. February–March, June and September–October months. Overall means for greasy fleece yield (GFY) per clip in Malpura sheep was 515 g and in Kheri sheep it was 510 g. Year had significant effect for all the growth traits. Breed also influenced significantly all the body weights except birth weight. Year and sex had significant effect on wool production. About 92% ewes produced first lamb at 16 to 20 month age (2 teeth stage), which indicated that most of the farmers breed their ewes at yearling stage.
