Abstract

Limited data are available on the relationship between nutritional status and pulmonary tuberculosis. Serum retinol and serum zinc plays a vital role in immune status of the individual. The objective of this study was to investigate the concentration of micronutrients in malnourished TB patients, admitted in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, CSM Medical University UP, Lucknow. In this case-control study, 30 patients aged 1855 year with active pulmonary TB were recruited and compared with 30 healthy controls. Cases had clinical and radiographic abnormalities consistent with pulmonary TB and at least two sputum specimens showing acid-fast bacilli. Compared with healthy control, Tb patients had lower concentration of serum retinol, serum zinc and albumin level as compared to controls.
