Associate Professor, S.C. Nandimath Law College, Bagalkot, India

Abstract

The International Labour Office in Geneva is the permanent secretariat of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and is made up of several departments. It prepares the documents and reports which form the material for the conferences and meetings of the organisation and runs a technical co- operation programme to support the standard-setting work of the organisation. Since 1919, the ILO has maintained and developed system of international labour standards (ILS) aimed at promoting opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work, in conditions of freedom, equity, security and dignity. The ILO as a voluntary organization has limited legal powers to enforce its instruments in member countries. Its major means are moral suasion and technical assistance to foster the adoption and implementation of ILS.
