Abstract

With the advent of handy devices and facilities, there has been a drastic increase in the use of Wireless Data Transmission, Wi-Fi. The usable radiofrequency spectrum is completely exploited and bandwidth re-use has began to compensate with the increasing user demand. The visible light communication (VLC; data transmission) is the best solution for growing user demands. Li-Fi (light-fidelity) is an innovative wireless communication system using VLC as a source of communication. It uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for high-speed information transmission. This technology is best for high-density wireless data communication in restricted area and to overcome radio interference problem. Li-Fi provides improved bandwidth, availability, efficiency and security than Wi-Fi and has already obtained very high speeds of about 10, 000 times more than the conventional Wi-Fi in the lab. By using the low-cost LED lamps, we can use visible light bandwidth to obtain tremendous speed. This paper attempts to review the basic concept of visible light transmission, how it is different from Wi-Fi, focusing more on its applications in various fields.
