The scientific community is giving considerable attention to making a wider hysteresis loop required for miniaturization of the magnetic devices for improving data storage capability. In this context, a review including the present state of the art of the hexagonal ferrites (HFs) and spinel ferrites (SFs) used for the data storage applications is reported. A classification scheme of ferrites useful for data storage is suggested, the magnetic properties and synthesis methods of ferrites are reviewed. A few X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibration sample magnetometer (VSM) results on ferrites from the literature are discussed. Further, the possible directions for improving the capability of ferrites for magnetic data storage applications are reported. This review should provide a faster understanding of this area.
