Abstract

The field of IR Sensors has been drawing the attention of various researchers because of their importance in the "IR Signature Estimation and Suppression". Various types of the IR sensors and the related materials along with their advantages and disadvantages for the specific applications have been reviewed. Various topics related to sensors - The Characteristics and Performance of the IR Sensors, Main Functions of a Detector, Some Important Concepts in the Field of Sensors, Types and Optimisation of Sensors, Dependence of Dark Current Density on the Bias Voltage, Comparison of the Quantum well Photoconductors in the IR Technology, Two Colour or Dual band IR Detectors, Air Defence Alerting Device (ADAD) Air Defence Sensors, have been discussed and presented in this paper. Because of the great importance of Mercury Cadmium Telluride (MCT) for these sensors, a detailed discussion of this material and its use for the sensors has been included. This technical review should be of great use to the designers and technologists engaged in the development and fabrication of the IR sensors, keeping in view the specific applications.
