Spintronics is a newly evolving field, which is based on the spin of electrons for the flow of current, and not on the movement of electrons, which is the case with electronics. The Magnetic Tunneling Junction (MTJ) is a multilayered thin film structure, fabricated by the sandwiching of an insulator between an inner hard ferromagnet, and an outer soft ferromagnet, and this junction plays a very significant role in the device fabrication of spintronic devices. The purpose of this technical note is to discuss the significance of the MTJ, and the Tunnel Magnetoresistance (TMR) in the designing of some of the spintronic devices, besides presenting the mathematical modeling of the MTJ. An attempt has also been made to review some of the recent exciting research studies on MTJs and MTR.
