Abstract

This paper presents work, concerning the determination of stress intensity factor for a finite width plate containing cracked circular hole, using the finite element method. Since geometries with very small cracks are of particular relevance for equivalent initial flaw size fatigue studies, stress intensity factor for very small cracks were of special interest and results were obtained for a range of crack lengths starting with 0.2mm and up to 1.8 mm. The variation of stress intensity factor for different ratios of crack length to plate width was discussed.

The plate in this work was modeled with CASCA, and the software FRANC 2D/L was used for processing the finite element method.
