Management of Okra yellow vein mosaic virus disease and its whitefly vector
Abstract
Efficacy of six plant products, acetyl salicylic acid and two insecticides, and seven crop barriers was evaluated in the field for the management of Okra yellow vein mosaic virus disease and its vector, Bemisia tabaci. Spraying with neem oil, neem seed kernel extract or leaf extracts of Bougainvillea spectabilis or Prosopis chilensis proved most effective in reducing the load of whiteflies and also in increasing the yield. Though maize was the most effective crop barrier, there was significant yield increase by each barrier crop over the control; all treatments were statistically at par. Correspondingly each barrier crop also markedly reduced the number of whiteflies per okra plant compared to control.
