Abstract

Infectious bursal disese is an economically important, acute, highly contagious viral infection of young chickens. It is caused by a small, non enveloped, bi-segmented RNA virus belonging to family Birnaviridae. The virus has predilection to immature B lymphocytes and infection results in bursal atrophy and severe immuno suppression. Sero-diagnosis of IBDV infection in young chicks is important in determining the time of vaccination when the maternally derived antibodies wane to permit establishment of vaccine virus. In the present study we have produced a non neutralizing, IgM type monoclonal antibody against the Georgia strain of IBD virus. The monoclonal antibody was used as trapping antibody for the IBDV antigen and a double antibody sandwich blocking ELISA was standardized for detecting serum antibodies in poultry birds. The results of monoclonal antibody based ELISA were compared with that of polyclonal antibody based ELISA and serum neutralization test. A significant coefficient of correlation was found in these tests.
