During the period from April 1999 to March 2004 a total of 263 outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) were recorded in Assam and 237 (90.11%) outbreaks were confirmed by the identification of the virus serotypes. The virus serotype O was common and involved in 129 (54.43%) outbreaks followed by the serotypes A in 102 (43.04%) outbreaks and Asia-1 in only 6 (2.53%) outbreaks. The virus serotype A although was predominant in 3 years but the serotype was not detected in the year 2001–02 and the serotype Asia-1 was not found in 1999–2000. Serological characterization of the selected virus isolates with vaccine virus strains revealed antigenic similarities with vaccine virus strains. Outbreaks of the disease were recorded in all the districts and more outbreaks in 5 districts of the state. The disease has been recorded in all the months and more outbreaks in March, November and June months. Cattle were affected in 256 (97.34%) outbreaks and pigs in 7 (2.66%) outbreaks. Buffaloes and goats were affected along with cattle in 2 of the outbreaks. Location of the outbreaks and the major routes of animal migration are shown.
